Meals on Wheels:

Lenoir County Council on Aging Home Delivered Meals

For those age 60+ who are homebound, LCCOA can provide eligible individuals 5 meals per week delivered to their homes. The meals are delivered frozen weekly and are easily heated in a microwave oven. Each meal meets one-third of the daily nutrition intake for seniors.

which includes Smyrna and La Vergne. We serve people in need of food.

How to Contact/Hours: The Food Pantry is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – Noon by appointment only. If you are in need of food, please call the Hotline number at 615-355-1784. Please follow the directions in the message and a volunteer will call you back.

Community Meals

Those age 60+ not considered home-bound can come to the George T. Skinner Senior Center in Kinston or the Margaret Hewitt Nutrition Site in Pink Hill to enjoy a meal and social interaction with others. Activities, health-related education, crafts, and special programming is offered daily. There is no cost to participate and to eat (consumer contributions are accepted but not required).

Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) – NCDOI

SHIIP is an arm of the NC Department of insurance whose purpose is to assist those with Medicare, those new to Medicare, and their loved ones in understanding Medicare options, getting answers to questions, and getting assistance with problems or concerns. Trained counselors can also screen for public assistance programs.

The North Carolina Lifespan Respite Program is an application-based program that reimburses eligible family caregivers caring for individuals of any age for up to $750 in respite care services in a calendar year. Funding is limited, and applications are accepted only when funds are available.

Applicants must be referred to the program by a local professional organization. The professional organization (referring agency) will complete the online application on behalf of the family caregiver.

Seniors aged 60+ who don't drive may receive assistance through LCCOA in getting around in Lenoir County. Consumers can get rides to the senior center, shopping, pharmacy, and other destinations within the County.

Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)

The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program is a federal program that normally provides a one-time payment in February to vendors on behalf eligible households to assist with heating expenses.

Applications are normally accepted during December for households with at least one member age 60 and above or a disabled person receiving services through DAAS.

Assists people who find themselves in an emergency or crisis situation and do not qualify for public assistance. Helps with rent, utility bills (electricity, water and natural gas), prescriptions (intended for one-time prescriptions need), limited transportation and also provides food from pantry. Financial assistance limited to $100 per 12-month period. Provides Christian counseling and referrals to other resources to solve the crisis. Applicants must bring: Valid NC picture ID, with Lenoir County address matching the bill's address, and the current bill for which applicant is seeking assistance. Usually, assistance is given until the 10th of the month on late bills.
