Living Well with Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and ulcers in the colon and rectum. It can lead to diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fatigue, and weight loss. While UC cannot be cured, daily habits and medical care can help you feel better and reduce flare-ups.
Everyday Tips
- Take your prescribed medicines every day, even when you feel well.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during flares.
- Eat balanced meals and avoid foods that trigger symptoms (high-fiber raw vegetables, fried foods, alcohol, caffeine, spicy dishes).
- Keep a daily food and symptom diary to help identify patterns.
- Stay up to date on colonoscopies and vaccines as recommended by your doctor.
When to Call Your Doctor
- Blood in your stool or black, tarry stools
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain or cramping
- Fever or unexplained weight loss
- Symptoms that don’t improve with your usual treatment
- Always ask your healthcare provider for specific advice on when to call to report symptoms, and when to seek urgent/emergency care.
Sample SMART Goals
- Drink at least 8 cups of water daily for the next month.
- Take oral mesalamine at the same time every day for the next 30 days.
- Walk for 20 minutes at least 5 days each week for the next month.
- Log meals and bowel movements daily for 4 weeks.
- Schedule and attend your next GI follow-up within 2 months.
Small, consistent steps make a big difference.
