Before we get moving, let us remember safety first! This article will cover a few general safety tips to keep in mind as you make efforts to be more active, be sure to check out part two of this article for additional safety tips as well!
Consult your doctor before starting any exercise program. This is for your own safety to ensure you and the provider are aware of any limitations or modifications that might be needed.
If exercising outside:

Stay in well-lit places and wear light-colored clothing.

Keep to daylight hours when possible.

Bring a flashlight with you and/or wear reflective material if exercising when dark.

Always face oncoming traffic.

If listening to music, keep the volume low enough that you can hear your surroundings.

Ideally, choose routes that are designated as walking/running/biking routes and have places where you can sit and rest if needed.

Watch for uneven ground, cracks in sidewalks, etc. as possible tripping hazards.

Carry your phone, ID, and wear your medical identification bracelet in case of an emergency.

If you are exercising alone, let a friend or family member know when you plan to be back.
If exercising outside in the heat:

Be active during cooler times of the day (before 12pm, after 4 pm).

Wear light-colored clothing and sunscreen.

Start slow if starting a new outdoor physical activity plan. It can take 2 or more weeks for your body to acclimate to the heat.

Speak with your doctor regarding any special considerations with respect to your chronic conditions and medications.
