As we begin to enter the time of year when many viruses like to make an unwanted appearance, let’s take a look at some foods that can help boost immune support.
1. Citrus Fruits: Oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and tangerines are packed with Vitamin C which can help boost the production of white blood cells. Eat these fruits on their own or add their juices into your food or drinks. Remember when using juices from these fruits to squeeze the fruit to get the juice yourself. Don’t buy cartons of these juices which are packed with sugar. When using the juice, add it to food or water in limited quantities. Don’t juice several oranges, for example, and drink a glass of orange juice. This will skyrocket your glucose levels.
2. Berries: Blueberries, blackberries, goji berries, acai berries, and others are packed with antioxidants as well as other vitamins and minerals. Antioxidants reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage.
3. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, etc., contain vitamin E, magnesium, vitamin B6, phosphorus, and selenium. Eat them on salads, oatmeal, or alone for their health-boosting nutrients.
4. Fish: Salmon, mackerel, and sardines contain high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids fight inflammation and help boost white blood cell activity. Our white blood cells help us fight infection.
5. Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, and collard greens all contain high levels of Vitamin C. So, you don’t have to overdo it on the citrus fruits and raise your glucose levels to get in enough Vitamin C. Eat those greens! They also contain beta-carotene and antioxidants. Both nutrients help our immune system fight off infection.
