Grapes

Sometimes referred to as nature’s cotton candy, grapes are a colorful globe-like fruit from the vine that have been around so long that fossilized stems and leaves have been found in the northern hemisphere. Grapes have been cultivated since 6500 BC. They grow in clusters and come in a variety of colors; red, purple, green, and yellow.

Grapes are a rich source of Vitamin C, an essential vitamin that helps to support our immune system, as well as Vitamin K.  Grapes are also a good source of potassium, which many Americans are deficient in. Potassium can help support our heart health, hydration, and muscle function. They are a good source of carbohydrates for energy, but they are not a rich source of fiber compared to other berries. Grapes even contain a powerful antioxidant known as resveratrol that can aid in fighting free radicals, as well as promoting a healthy heart.

There are a variety of ways to enjoy the natural sweetness of grapes, making them easy to savor as a convenient and refreshing snack. If eating grapes fresh, they should be plump and firm. It is ideal for grapes to come attached to the vine, allowing you to remove them from the vine before consumption. Grapes can generally last up to 5 days in the refrigerator. For a unique twist, you can try freezing them and enjoy them as a chilled healthy treat. Raisins are dried grapes that offer a concentrated burst of sweetness and a chewy texture that can make them a great addition to trail mix or on top of oatmeal.

Consider adding grapes to your menu for a nutritious and delicious snack!
