Nutrition for Eye Health

When it comes to maintaining healthy eyesight, proper nutrition plays a key role.  Research has shown that certain nutrients can significantly impact eye health and reduce the risk of vision problems.  Consuming a wider variety of nutrients can help protect against age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye-related conditions. Specific nutrients that are beneficial to our eye health include:

  • Antioxidants: can help to combat the harmful effects of free radicals on the eyes. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants include dark green leafy vegetables, and vibrant red and orange fruits and vegetables.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: can help prevent dry eyes and are an anti-inflammatory nutrient. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, tuna, mackerel, walnuts, chia seeds, and ground flaxseeds.

  • Vitamin E: protects the eyes from damage and can be found in foods such as almonds, seeds, olive oil, and avocados.

  • Zinc: can help prevent cellular damage in your retina. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, beef, eggs, and dairy products.

That’s a wrap on our eye-opening news for today. Consider prioritizing your eye health through a well-balanced diet. In addition, you can try to maintain a healthy lifestyle by refraining from smoking, controlling your blood sugars and blood pressure, and protecting your eyes from UV light.
