Tips for Processing Negative Emotions

Today we'll review a few tips that can help to brighten your spirits if you're dealing with negative emotions. Our thoughts can affect our health due to our mind-body connection. Training your brain to be more positive can potentially help to lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk for heart disease, improve your immune system, and improve sleep patterns and digestion. The following are practical tips that can help when you're feeling down:

Focus on your feelings in the moment. If you are upset, you can feel those feelings but also recognize that you don’t always feel this way and that you are not doomed to feel upset forever. Be open to letting the feeling go and not letting it linger.

Take deep breaths. Practice deep breathing to help release any built-up tensions.

Banish those negative thoughts by challenging their validity. Try asking yourself questions like- Is this thought or belief true? Did I jump to conclusions? Is there any evidence that supports these thoughts?

Make a list of positive affirmations. Replace the negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Affirmations are a statement consisting of positive thoughts and beliefs about yourself. An example of an affirmation is, “I am wonderful just as I am, I am determined, I have a big heart.”

Talk it out. Share your feelings with someone close to you. We all have negative thoughts at times. If you share your thoughts with someone close to you they might be able to provide a new perspective that could help to brighten your spirit.

Remember that negative feelings can pop up from time to time, but finding something positive to help shift your mindset can help to brighten up your day.
