When You Have Acid Reflux

Did you know that heartburn or acid reflux can be a sign of poor eating habits? Therefore, unsurprisingly it’s a pretty common problem. Acid reflux is often a sign of decreased stomach acid (hypochlorhydria). Aside from changing dietary habits and eating healthier, one thing you can try is adding 1 to 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water and drinking it before meals. This can reduce heartburn or even eliminate it after the meal. After the age of 50, our acid production tends to decline, and heartburn can become even more of a problem. Your provider may suggest digestive enzymes and/or hydrochloric acid supplements to help. Aside from apple cider vinegar and eating a clean whole food diet, you can also consider increasing your prebiotic fiber intake. Prebiotic fiber helps to feed the gut bacteria that produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that helps with digestion and calms inflammation. It is thought that butyrate might counter insulin resistance as well. Always be sure to check with your provider before starting any new supplement.
